The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

The early years foundation stage sets the standards for the learning, development and care for children from birth to five years old (end of Reception Class). All Ofsted registered early years setting, schools and childminders must follow and adhere to the EYFS.

What to expect when

The booklet is to help you as a parent/carer find out more about how your child is learning and developing during their first five years, in relation to the EYFS. Children develop more rapidly during the first five years of their lives than at any other time. This booklet has been written to help you as a parent know what to expect during these vitally important years by focusing on the seven areas of learning and development which are covered in the EYFS.

Policy Documents

As part of the “Early Years Foundation Stage” framework, it is necessary that nursery settings meet all statutory welfare requirements, that are regulated under the “Ofsted” registration, and which include a set criteria regarding policies and procedures.

All our policies are available to view, as are risk assessments – please speak to the Nursery Manager, Mrs Lisa Bellam-Brown.

British Values in the Early Years

There has been great emphasis on the important role that British Values can play in education:

“to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

The British Values are:

  • Democracy
  • Rule of Law
  • Individual Liberty
  • Mutual Respect and Tolerance

Please ask to see our British Values Policy and Curriculum Links to gain an understanding of how we at Sunshine Nursery actively promote British values within the setting.
